The Speech-Language Pathologist provides specialized treatment programs for coping with problems related to changes in the brain and body due to congenital defects, injury, illness, and/or the aging process. Some of the areas that a speech pathologist may address include problems of speech-language production and comprehension, problems with cognitive or “thinking” skills, and also swallowing disorders following a stroke. Communication problems may arise from injury or disease that affects the head and/or neck and damages the actual speech mechanism, such as the mouth, tongue or larynx, or the area of the brain that formulates and interprets communication. Problems may also arise when hearing problems interfere with effective communication with others. Speech-Language Pathologists are also trained in performing a hearing screening to assess hearing loss.

Who would benefit from SLP Services? You may wish to discuss the need for SLP with your physician if you are experiencing difficulty with: expressing thoughts, speaking, reading or writing, interacting through conversation, hearing others, understanding what is spoken, swallowing or chewing, thinking, or with your cognitive skills.
