Occupational therapy is a treatment approach that is derived from the "occupations" of everyday living and surviving in the environment in which the patient lives. Occupational Therapists can intervene following a loss of ability related to an injury or illness. In addition to working with you to improve your ability to perform activities of daily life such as feeding, hygiene, dressing, bathing, and homemaking skills, OT can also provide rehabilitation of the component skills required to care for yourself. This may include working to improve your ability to sit up and use your hands or to move from one position to another. The Occupational Therapist assesses your physical abilities to perform these everyday tasks. Range of movement, strength, and coordination are evaluated as well as perceptual abilities, cognitive abilities, safety skills, and judgment. Sometimes, splints may be applied to reduce or prevent contractures, or provide comfort and positioning. All activities are geared toward gaining function to meet the needs of the person's living environment whether it be at home, a residential care facility, a relative's home, a boarding home, or a nursing home.

Who would benefit from OT Services? You may wish to discuss the need for OT with your physician if you are experiencing difficulty with:

  • Feeding yourself

  • Dressing yourself

  • Bathing yourself

  • Grooming yourself

  • Moving about your home

  • Limitations in arm and hand functions

  • Wheelchair positioning
